Article summary

This information is specific to the latest release of PARCview:

7.2.x

PARCdisplay Service allows dataPARC Displays to be accessed through a web-based service instead of from a shared network folder.

PARCdisplay Service Limitations

  • The service works for PARCview-type files only.
  • The service uses a single user account for access to all folders and files, so all users for a particular service instance will have the same access rights to all of the folders/files.
  • The service can only be run as a local admin on the server.
  • Users cannot create or modify PARCgraphics Designer files over the service.
  • The DSN field in Site Select will not have access to a UDL file in a network location, so the UDL file needs to be on the client.
  • The service does not support shortcuts.

PARCSecurity Permissions

No PARCSecurity Permissions associated directly with PARCdisplay Service.

Configuration

PARCDisplayServiceServer.exe.config

Renamed from “PARCDisplayServiceServer.exe.SAMPLE.config” to “PARCDisplayServiceServer.exe.config”.

There are two settings in the PARCDisplayServiceServer.exe.config File which need to be modified: the “baseAddress” and the “RootPath” values.

The baseAddress value requires the IP address or host name of the server where the service is running and the port number to use. By default, it is set to “localhost:2012”. Replace localhost with the IP address or host name and select a different port number if needed.

The port can be set to any available port. If there is a firewall in between the client and the server, rules for the TCP Port will need to be defined.

The RootPath value is set to the directory where the dataPARC Displays folder is located. The computer running the service and the service logon account should be able to access this path. It can be a UNC path or local path.

Change PARCview Select Site to Use URL Instead of Folder Path

In PARCview Site Connection Configuration, change the Displays Path value to the PARCdisplay Service URL, as defined in the baseAddress value of the PARCdisplayServiceServer.exe.config:

To override the location of the displays folder on the server, in the Display Path field add a ‘;’ at the end and then the path name.

Log Files

PARCmessage is a built-in error monitoring software. It creates an ongoing log of errors generated from PARCview on the specific computer where PARCmessage is running.

Errors can also be stored in the PARCview install directory both on the server and clients ...\Capstone\PARCView\LogFiles

Other errors will be stored in the root folder of the PARCDisplay Service ...\Capstone\PARCdisplayService\LogFiles
