Article summary

This information is specific to the latest release of PARCview:

7.2.x

Trends is a data visualization tool that pulls data from pre-defined tags. Tags can consist of, but are not limited to; Process Tags, Grade Tags, and Calc Tags. Users are able to group Tags into multiple trends/displays and they are able to define certain parameters for viewing their data such as selecting a date range, isolating Tags, and even comparing the data to pre-defined alarms to help spot issues. Trends can be saved locally by individual users or they can be saved to a network Share location so that multiple users can view the same Trend.

There are many tools that allow users to isolate data within a Trend. Some examples include isolating a date range, using the smart mouse feature to grab specific data at a specific time, and viewing data in the context of what grade is running at a given time.

PARCSecurity Permissions

PARCSecurity plays no major role in controlling access to Trends. In order to limit access to a trend you would want use Windows folder and file rights.

Configuration

The default location for saved Trends is setup when PARCview is first installed. In order for Trends, or any displays to be available to all clients displays must be saved into a Share location. Locally stored Display files are only available locally.

Configuration of Trends can be done when a Trend display is open. Right clicking on the Trend or on a tag being Trended will open a context menu that will allow users to modify the trend or tag. Examples of items users can modify include but is not limited to:

  • Projecting future data based on current data using ‘Projected Data’
  • Using data within the trend to create different types of charts as an additional data viewing tool. Users can create tabular, Pareto, histogram, and X-Y plot charts using ‘Charts’

Users are also able to modify a tags description at the top to enable basic scripting and functions. For example, you can take a tags data and without having to go to the dedicated script editor, you can apply different functions to said tag.

Log Files

When a Trend or other display is opened any errors that are generated by that Display will generally be shown in the PARCMessage application.

Errors can also be stored in the PARCview install directory both on the server and clients ...\Capstone\PARCView\LogFiles

Required Server Applications

Anything needed for PARCview to be open/running is required for trends to work and populate with data.

  • UA Server: All PARCview vr 7 functionality requires a Universal Access (UA) server.
  • GDS: All PARCview vr 7 functionality requires a Global Discovery Server (GDS).

Additionally, anything that pulls or collects data also needs to be running so that users can have real time data. Of note these applications play a major role in using Trends:

  • PortIO/PortIO File copy: Depending on how your site is setup and how your server/clients collect data you may need PortIO to be running.
  • PARCIO: Depending on how your site is setup and how your server/clients collect data you may need PortIO to be running.
  • PARCfile copy client/server: Depending on how your site is setup and how your server/clients collect data you may need PARCfile copy to be running.
  • PARCtag Sync: Needed so that tags are constantly synced as Trends get their data from tags.
  • PARCcalc Server: Some tags come from the PARCcalc server, additionally if you use a script combining a production tag and a PARCcalc tag this will be needed.
  • PARCAlarm Server: The server application generates Alarm events based on the Alarm Rules defined in the Alarm Configuration area.
