Article summary

This information is specific to the latest release of PARCview:

7.2.x

Logbook functions like a message board. Its primary purpose is to record information about a process, area of operations, or a general category. Logbook can be configured to meet a site’s needs for potential reporting of safety issues, machine maintenance, general comments, or other use cases that can be defined on a site-by-site basis. Different from other display types, there is only one Logbook. Any saved Logbook displays will only open to a specific part of Logbook but will not contain any different information. Logbook has built-in security and a robust auditing trail to ensure that information stored and used by a site is accurate and reliable.

PARCSecurity Permissions

PARCsecurity Console has permissions to control access to Logbook

  • Launch PARCView: This permission will either allow or deny a user or group access to the main PARCView application
  • Logbook Edit: The logbook edit permission is what is required for Logbook administrators (or general PARCView administrators) to make changes to the layout, defaults, and function of Logbook.

Configuration

The default location for saved Logbook configuration is setup when PARCview is first installed. However, a normal user will not be able to change the configuration of Logbook, instead they are only able to save a location in Logbook as if it was a bookmark for a website.

The actual configuration of Logbook is done with someone that has the permissions to do so. After the initial setup of Logbook users can choose to use either Area Configuration or Logbook Configuration:

  • Area Configuration: Area configuration is likely to be the most used configuration method. You can customize an areas name, what equipment is assigned to that area, and even manage an email distribution list for high priority entries. Area Configuration also controls who can contribute to specific sections of the Logbook.
  • Logbook Configuration: Logbook configuration controls the display settings and defaults for logbook. It also allows designated users to change logbook categories/characterizations. The final piece is that the contacts page lets admins update user contact information from one central place.

Log Files

When Logbook is opened any errors that are generated by Logbook will generally be shown in the PARCMessage application. Other errors may be stored the PARCview client install folder.

  • PARCmessage is a built-in error monitoring software. It creates an ongoing log of errors generated from PARCview on the specific computer where PARCmessage is running.
  • Errors can also be stored in the PARCview install directory both on the server and clients ...\Capstone\PARCView\LogFiles

Required Server Applications

No server applications are required to use Logbook.

UA Server: All PARCview vr 7 functionality requires a Universal Access (UA) server.

GDS: All PARCview vr 7 functionality requires a Global Discovery Server (GDS).
